LMS - Learning Management System, is a general name for a system that can handle the management of a learning environment. Sometimes the terms are interchanged with "CMS" or "Course Management System". There are many LMS systems out there, including (but not limited to): Blackboard, Moodle and Sakai. These Learning Management Systems allow for delivering courses or course materials to students. An LMS creates a synchronous, web-based classroom environment. Some of the tools available within an LMS are Blogs, Wikis, Journals and Discussion Boards.
