Extrinsic motivation refers to external forces that influence behaviour.

Extrinsic motivators involve either a "carrot" or "stick":

  • Carrot - or reward - Behaviour performed to gain an external reward such as money or recognition
  • Stick - or punishment - Behaviour performed to avoid an external punishment such as a fine or criticism
