Extrinsic motivation refers to external forces that influence behaviour.
Extrinsic motivators involve either a "carrot" or "stick":
- Carrot - or reward - Behaviour performed to gain an external reward such as money or recognition
- Stick - or punishment - Behaviour performed to avoid an external punishment such as a fine or criticism
