Lady Verney
Lady Verney, LL.D., widow of Sir Edmund Verney, Bt., of Claydon, died yesterday at Rhianva, Menai Bridge, at the age of 86.
Margaret Maria, the eldest daughter of Sir John Hay-Williams, Bt., she married Captain Edmund Hope Verney, R.N., in 1868. He succeeded his father as third baronet in 1894, and died in 1910. Lady Verney shared her husband's Liberalism in politics, and took an active part in the movement for higher education in Wales from the beginning. She served also on rural school boards, and on the Education Committee of the Bucks County Council. She was junior deputy chancellor and member of the council of the North Wales University College, and received from the University of Wales the honorary degree of LL.D. Lady Verney will be remembered for her edition of the Verney MSS., and for her part in the Verney Memoirs. She leaves an only son, Sir Harry Verney, D.S.O., the present baronet, and two daughters.
The funeral will be at Llandegfan on Friday, and there will be a memorial service at Middle Claydon Church on Monday at 3 o'clock.
