DRAKE, Samuel Adams (1833—). An American editor and author, born in Boston, the son of Samuel Gardner Drake. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he became inspector and adjutant-general of the Kansas militia, and in 1864 brigadier-general. His many works include: Old Landmarks of Boston (1873); New England Legends and Folk-Lore (1884); The Making of the Great West (1887); The Making of the Ohio Valley States (1894); The Watch Fires of '76 (1895); Myths and Fables of Today (1900).
