GILBERT CONNATT, the narrator, once a motion picture idol but now penniless, is persuaded by Jake Switz, kindly utility man of the theatrical world, to accept a rĂ´le in the play Ruthven, opposite Sigrid Holgar, Connatt's ex-sweetheart, who since her break with Connatt has become a glamorous film favorite.
