King Gustaf V. is the fifth sovereign of the House of Ponte Corvo and gr?at.grandson of Marshal Bernadotte, Prince of Ponte Corvo, who was "elected heir-apparent of the crown of Sweden by the Parliament of the Kingdom, Aug. 21, 1810, and ascended the throne Feb ^ 1818, under the name of Carl XIV. Johan. He was succeeded at his death March 8, 1844, by his only son Oscar. The latter died July 8, 1859 and was succeeded by his eldest son Carl XV., at whose premature death without male children, the crown fell to his next surviving brother the late King
