The quarries of Italy employed in 1911, 70,767 persons (1,182 females), the output of building and decorative stone being valued at 41, 955, 969 lire (marble, 24,076,076 lire). The total output Avas valued at 61,048,203 lire in 1911.
In 1911 there were 99,354 persons employed at lime and brick kilns, whose output was of the value of 173,595,764 lire.
IV. Fisheries.
On December 31, 1910, the number of vessels and boats employed in fishing was 27,422, with an aggregate tonnage of 75,872. These numbers include 50 boats of 457 tons engaged in coral fishing. There were 121,076 fishermen, of whom 6,230 were engaged in deep-sea or foreign fishing. The value of the fish caught in 1909 (excluding foreign fishing) was estimated at 22,407,000 lire ; the value obtained from tunny-fishing was 3,485,000 lire and from coral-fishing 486,000 lire, the quantity being estimated at 50,350
kilogrammes.
