Revenue and Expenditure.
The revenue of the colony is derived mainly from import duties, which produced, on the average of the last five years, rather more than a quarter of a million sterling per annum. Comparatively little is derived from rent or sales of public lands, although enormous dis- tricts are waiting to be cultivated, and the price of agricultural produce is very high. A large portion of the expenditure is for police, gaols, and convicts. The actual income and expenditure of the colony during the ten years, from 1859 to 18G8, were as follows: —
