The trade with the United Kingdom is of a stationary character. The value of the imports from the United Kingdom amounted to 15,562,445 thaler in 1865, and to 17,360,425 thaler in 1866. The exports from Bremen to the United Kingdom were of the value of 4,015,825 thaler in 1865, and of 4,358,885 thaler in 1866.
To Bremen and its river harbour of Bremerhaven was conceded, in 1868, together with Hamburg, the privilege of remaining 'tree ports,' exempt from the German customs limits. In compensation for the loss of duties thus arising, the state agreed to pay a tax, proportioned to its trade, annually to the administration of the
Zollverein.
