This index does not include names that may be found directly by alphabetical reference to the text. The main purpose of the index is to help the reader find names that have been discarded for various reasons. However, space has not permitted the inclusion of all the variations in spelling of Indian names taken from early writers. Most of them are not important.
Also since names beginning with the words “Camp,” “Cape,” “Fort,” “Lake,” “Mount,” and “The,” are printed in the text under those headings the index lists the last words of all such compound names with their page numbers. Thus, Hood, Mount, is on page 420, under the name Mount Hood.
