THE ROSE AND THE WEED.

Up these very stairs she went,
Down these rooms she daily sent
Smiles of greeting as he came;
Can I dare to come and claim
What she held with such a grace!
Can I dare to take her place?

When I entered at the door
Would her face not go before?
When my foot was on the stair,
Would he not, before me there,
Hear her tread, and thrill with pain,
More than once and once again?
