the Roman Portus Magnus, Arzeu has of late ycurs acquired fresh importance os
the terminus of tho railway which taps the alfa districts of the upland plateaux. Besides alfa, it exports salt, chlorine, soda, and other chemicals, either collected or
manufactured on the banks of the saline Lake El-Melah, in which basin about two
million tons of salt are yearly deposited. Some Roman ruins are scattered along
the beach, at one spot numerous enough to take the name of "Old Arzeu." In
