His confidantes, Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, John Gay, Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford, Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, Thomas Parnell, wrote some of the most striking political verse and prose of the early 18th century, and Arbuthnot himself created the character of John Bull for his prose Law Is A Bottomless Pit
