Russian soldier; commander of Russian forces in Turkmenistan (1879), later writing a critical history of the operations; Russian Imperial Minister of War (1898-1904); In 1906, following the Russian defeat in the Russo-Japanese War for which many blamed him, Kuropatkin briefly served as a member of the State Council
