Symbol rate

Symbol rate (also called baud rate and modulation rate) is the number of symbols that happen each second.[1] The name "baud rate" comes from Émile Baudot, the person who invented the Baudot code.[1]

'Symbol' in this sense means something like 'basic signal event'. The word symbol usually has a much wider meaning.
