Lionel Hampton

Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 – August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, composer, philanthropist, percussionist, bandleader and actor. Hampton worked with Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker and Quincy Jones. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky.

President George W. Bush honored Hampton in June 2001

In 1992, he was added into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.

Hampton died from heart failure on August 31, 2002 in New York City at the age of 94.[1]
