Howard S. Becker

Howard Saul Becker (April 18, 1928 August 16, 2023) was an American sociologist. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was known for his works to the sociology of deviance, sociology of art, and sociology of music.[1] Becker also wrote extensively on sociological writing styles and methodologies.[1]

Becker's 1963 book Outsiders created the foundations for labeling theory.[2] He worked at the University of Chicago.

Becker died in San Francisco, California on August 16, 2023 at the age of 95.[3]
