David Amess

Sir David Anthony Andrew Amess (26 March 1952 – 15 October 2021) was an English politician. He was an MP for Southend West from 1997 until his assassination in 2021.

Life

He was born in Plaistow, Essex. He was a member of the Conservative Party. Amess was an MP for Basildon from 1983 to 1997.

Political life

Amess was a Eurosceptic. He supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum. He was also a supporter of Leave Means Leave, a pro-Brexit campaign.

Assassination

On 15 October 2021, Amess was assassinated by stabbing outside of a church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. He was 69 years old.[1] Ali Harbi Ali, a 25-year-old British citizen of Somali ethnicity who lives in London, was arrested at the scene. Islamic extremism is believed to have been the motive for the attack.[2] On 21 October 2021, Ali was charged with murder and the preparation of terrorist acts.[3]
