Area code 617

Area code 617 is an area code for Massachusetts. It is one of the first area codes created in 1947. It initially covered the entire eastern portion of Massachusetts, but after it was split by 508 in 1988, as well as 781 and 978 in 1997. It now covers the Boston and Cambridge area. It was overlaid by 857 in 2001.
