Rashmika Mandanna (/rəʃmɪkɑː mənðənɑː/; born 5 April 1996)[1] is an Indian actress who works in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films.[2] She is a recipient of four SIIMA Awards and a Filmfare Awards South.

Rashmika made her acting debut with the Kannada film Kirik Party (2016), and had her first Telugu film release in the romantic comedy Chalo (2018). A turning point in her career came with the romance Geetha Govindam (2018), which won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – South. She played the leading lady in the action comedies Devadas (2018) and Sarileru Neekevvaru (2020), and the romance Bheeshma (2020), with her performance in the latter earning critical acclaim. Rashmika's first Tamil release came in the action drama film Sulthan (2021).

She gained wider success for playing the leading lady in the action film Pushpa: The Rise (2022). Following a supporting role in the period drama Sita Ramam (2022), she expanded to Hindi cinema and had her highest-grossing release with the action thriller Animal (2023).

Early life and education

Rashmika Mandanna was born on 5 April 1996 into a Kodava family[3] to Suman and Madan Mandanna in Virajpet, a town in Kodagu district of Karnataka[4][5] and has a younger sister.[6] Her father is the owner of a coffee estate and a function hall called Serenity in Virajpet, Karnataka whilst her mother is a housewife.[7] Rashmika's family had struggled financially, having difficulties finding a home and being able to pay rent.[8]

She studied for a bachelor's degree in Psychology, Journalism and English Literature at the M. S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Bangalore.[4] Despite initial hesitation about Rashmika's pursuit of an acting career due to her unassertive personality, her parents eventually granted her permission to follow through with it.[9]As a child, Rashmika attended Coorg Public School, a boarding school located in Gonikoppal, in which she excelled academically.[10] However, during this time period, she expressed feeling "misunderstood" because of communication challenges, resulting in her "crying in [her] room for hours" and struggling to connect with peers.[11] She credits her mother as the stabilising influence in her life, labelling her as her "biggest strength".[11]

Career

Early work and breakthrough (2016–2020)

In 2016, she made her acting debut with Kirik Party, which went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year in Kannada.[12] Sunavana Suresh of The Times of India praised Rashmika in the film stating, "Rashmika Mandanna as Saanvi is easily that pin-up girl in college and she breathes her path".[13] She won a SIMA Award for the Best Debut Actress for the role.[14] In 2017, she appeared in two Kannada films, Anjani Putra and Chamak with both emerging as box office successes.[15]

Rashmika in 2019

In 2018, Rashmika expanded to Telugu cinema with the comedy-drama film, Chalo opposite Naga Shourya.[16] Stivathsan Nadadhur of The Hindu reviewed, "The makers try to slot Rashmika Mandanna into the lively-bubbly space of a female lead and she makes a confident Telugu debut".[17] The film was a commercial success at the box office.[18] Rashmika's second release of 2018 was a second Telugu film with the Venky Kudumula-directed Geetha Govindam opposite Vijay Deverakonda.[19] The film was Rashmika's highest grosser up to that point with a gross of ₹132 crores against a budget of ₹5 crores.[20] However, the movie garnered mixed reviews from critics with Haricharan Pudipeddi of Firstpost stating, "Geetha Govindam, despite its flaws, is a film that gets most things right associated with its genre".[21] She earned the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress - South for the role along with the Zee Cine Telugu Award for Favourite Actress.[22][23] Rashmika's final release of 2018 was the Sriram Adittya directorial, Devadas.[24] Although a commercial success, Rashmika was said to be "deprived of speaking lines," by Manoj Kumar R of The Indian Express.[25]

In 2019, Rashmika returned to Kannada movies with the commercially successful, Yajamana opposite Darshan.[26] Despite earning the SIIMA Award for Best Actress (Critics) – Telugu, the age gap between the two leads was criticised by Karthik Keramalu of Film Companion.[27][28] Rashmika's second and ultimate film release of 2019 was the Telugu movie Dear Comrade, marking a reunion with Devarkonda.[29] However Rashmika was not able to replicate the success of their previous project, resulting in the film failing at the box office thus marking her first commercial failure.[30] Along with this, the movie sparked controversy over a scene featuring a kiss between Devarkonda and Rashmika.[31] Rashmika defended the scene in response to the public outcry stating, "The particular scene in the film demanded it and I should do justice to my role. No movie should be judged solely on the basis of a lip-lock scene. It should be seen as a whole".[32]

Rashmika’s first of two releases in 2020 was opposite Mahesh Babu in the Telugu film Sarileru Neekevvaru, which went on to become one of the highest-grossing Telugu films.[33] Despite its success at the box office, the film faced criticism from critics with Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu noting, "This isn't a part by which Rashmika can be judged because all she gets to do is fawn over Mahesh," bringing attention to the character's limited scope.[34] In the same year, she starred in the Telugu film Bheeshma opposite Nithiin which received critical and commercial acclaim.[35]

Career expansion (2021–present)

In 2021, her first release was with the Dhruva Sarja-starrer Pogaru.[36] Rashmika was criticised for taking on a role in a movie with "stereotypes that demean women" by Vivek M V of the Deccan Herald.[37] In her second release of 2021, she debuted in Tamil cinema opposite Karthi in the commercially successful Sulthan.[38] Although credited as a lead, Haricharan Pudipeddi of Hindustan Times found that Rashmika had appeared to have been "sidelined",[39] while, M Suganth of The Times of India had a different take, praising Rashmika on her "charming debut".[40] Rashmika's final appearance of 2021 was the critically and commercially successful Pushpa: The Rise starring Allu Arjun about the rise of a coolie, Pushpa Raj, in the smuggling syndicate of red sandalwood.[41][42] The film was a significant breakthrough in Rashmika's career as she gained national recognition for her role as Srivalli.[43] Mukesh Manjunath of Film Companion found that Rashmika "does her best to imbue bubbliness and the innocence required in these testosterone-charged surroundings" but criticised that "her brown-facing is unnecessary and ineffective".[44]

Rashmika at an event for Pushpa: The Rise in 2022

In 2022, she had three releases starting with the unremarkable Telugu feature, Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu as Aadhya opposite Sharwanand.[45][46] She then had a supporting role in the Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur-led Telugu film, Sita Ramam.[47] The movie garnered critical acclaim and was a major success at the box office.[48] In his review for Hindustan Times, Haricharan Pudipeddi appreciated Rashmika's portrayal of "a character that goes through a transformation," and thought that it is "well brought out by her performance".[49] In her final release of 2022, Rashmika appeared alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the family comedy-drama film, Goodbye marking her debut into Hindi cinema.[50] The film, however, was a box-office bomb.[51] Despite this, Devesh Sharma of Filmfare found Rashmika's scenes to be "as natural as can be" adding that she managed to "leave an impact even in this non-glamorous debut".[52] For her performance in the film, she earned the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.[53]

Rashmika had a string of releases in 2023 starting with her second Tamil film, Varisu opposite Vijay which went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of Tamil cinema.[54] Similar to opinions on her previous Tamil release, M Suganth of The Times of India opined that Rashmika was simply "arm candy" in the film.[55] In the same month, Rashmika starred in her second Hindi film as a blind woman with the spy thriller, Mission Majnu opposite Sidharth Malhotra.[56] In preparation for the role, she underwent special training to understand the body language and awareness of visually-impaired people.[57] Even so, the film received negative reviews from critics due to its unduly nationalistic views.[58] In a scathing review for Film Companion, Deepanjana Pal criticised Rashmika's character of Nasreen, opining that she was "as important to the plot as the third spare wheel of a two-wheeler".[59]

Her third and final release of 2023 was the Hindi action film, Animal opposite Ranbir Kapoor.[60] Acknowledging the film's misogynistic tone, Rahul Desai of Film Companion found Rashmika’s acting in a key confrontation scene with Kapoor's character to be "a race against time", adding that "the result isn’t pretty".[61] However, according to Proma Khosla of IndieWire, she put forth a "commendable effort" but criticised the limited opportunities provided in the film for Rashmika to "showcase her talent".[62] Despite polarising reviews from critics along with mixed reactions towards her character of Geetanjali, Animal emerged a major commercial success.[63][64][65] Rashmika has since defended her character, stating "Geetanjali […] the only force at home holding her family together. She is pure, real, unfiltered, strong and raw", however, she also would "question" her character’s decisions but understood this was not her story and, rather, the story of her character and the love she has for her husband.[66]

Rashmika will next star in three Telugu films starting with reprising her role as Srivalli in the sequel Pushpa 2: The Rule[67] and then starring in the female-led films Rainbow and The Girlfriend.[68][69] She will also portray Yesubai Bhonsale, opposite Vicky Kaushal, in the Hindi historical drama Chaava.[70]

Personal life

Rashmika began dating her co-star Rakshit Shetty during the making of Kirik Party, with the couple getting engaged on 3 July 2017 in a private party at her hometown of Virajpet.[71] However, the couple mutually broke off their engagement in September 2018, citing compatibility issues.[72][73]

Rashmika in 2022

Rashmika was placed at the 24th position in Bangalore Times' 25 Most Desirable Women of 2016[74] and also appeared in the Bangalore Times' 30 Most Desirable women of 2017.[75] In October 2021, she placed first in Forbes India's most influential stars on Instagram in South Cinema.[76]

In November 2023, a deepfake of Rashmika was created and posted on the platform X with her face being morphed onto an Instagram video posted by a British-Indian woman named Zara Patel. Rashmika released a statement saying she was, "[scared] not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused". The video has amassed millions of views across all social platforms and numerous voices of support from prominent figures in Indian cinema, including her co-star Amitabh Bachchan, have spoken out against the dangers of these deepfakes. As of 17 December 2023, there is no information on the creator of the deepfake, however, Delhi Police "have communicated with Meta to obtain the URL ID associated with the account responsible for generating the video", and filed a First information report (FIR) in relation to the case.[77][78][79][80]
