- 1848 – The high bridge of the Newcastle to Berwick Railway across the River Tyne in England is completed.
- 1886 – The rail connection to Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick, is completed by a predecessor of the New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Railway.
- 1905 – Construction begins on the Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, Nevada.
- 1909 – E. H. Harriman (pictured), the executive in charge of both the Union Pacific Railroad and the Southern Pacific Railroad, dies (b. 1848).
