- 1803 – The Surrey Iron Railway, in the south of London, England, opens.
- 1881 – Construction crews on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad's Alpine Tunnel, in Colorado, break through to connect both ends of the tunnel.
20th century
- 1910 – The London and South Western Railway (pictured) introduces new Continental service, Southampton-Havre.
- 1988 – Israel's Knesset approves an amendment to the Ports Authority Law, merging Israel Railways into the Israel Port Authority, henceforth to be known as the Israel Ports and Railways Authority.
