- 1883 – Ginery Twichell, president of the Boston and Worcester Railroad beginning in 1857, president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway 1870–1873, dies (b. 1811).
- 1899 – After successfully lobbying for a change in Canadian Federal regulations and a new city by-law to allow the service, the Ottawa Electric Railway begins Sunday operations.
- 1909 – Ernest F. Cambier, Belgian colonial pioneer who established the first Congo railway, dies (b. 1844).
- 1984 – The Dublin Area Rapid Transit (pictured) opens, serving Dublin with an electrified rapid transit service for commuters. The original route was from Howth to Bray.
