- 1873 – The first section of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway is opened between Topeka, Kansas, and the Colorado/Kansas border.
- 1893 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway enters receivership three days after the railroad's chairman, George C. Magoun, died.
20th century
- 1992 – Nuevo Central Argentino is granted a concession to operate freight trains over former Ferrocarriles Argentinos tracks in and around Buenos Aires.

- 2001 – An incorrect brake application on a CSX local train that had stopped to perform switching at Kodak Park (Charlotte, New York) causes the train to run away and derail 5 miles (8.0 km) later, destroying homes and businesses in the area.
