- 1849 – The Old Guarantee System providing land grants to English companies for railroad construction in India is finalized.
- 1860 – The Oil Creek Railroad (stock certificate pictured) is chartered by railroad investor Thomas Struthers of Warren, Pennsylvania, and several other Warren businessmen
- 1886 – The 7-mile (11 km) long Lakeside and Marblehead Railroad is incorporated in Ottawa County, Ohio.
- 1897 – W. B. Purvis is awarded a patent for an electric railroad switch.
