- 1853 – The New York Central Railroad (pictured) is formed through the merger of ten smaller railroads in the New York area.
- 1900 – Kreis Westhavelland opens as a 750 mm (2 ft 5+1⁄2 in) gauge railway connecting Rathenow, Senzke and Paulinenaue, in the German state of Brandenburg.
- 1910 – Butzbach-Licher Eisenbahn in Germany opens the section from Bad Nauheim to Rockenberg.
- 1914 – Construction begins on the Connaught Tunnel in the Selkirk Mountains under Rogers Pass on the Canadian Pacific Railway main line between Calgary, Alberta, and Revelstoke, British Columbia.
