Ningol Chakkouba, also known as Ningol Chakouba or Hiyangei Nini Paanba (Meitei for 'second day of Hiyaangei'), is a traditional Meitei festival, celebrated by the Meitei people in the second lunar day of Hiyangei (October–November) month of Meitei calendar. It is celebrated in the theme of strengthening the bond of love between married ningol (Meitei for 'ladies') and their paternal families.[1] In addition to its celebration in western countries, like Australia and Canada,[2][3] by Indian diasporas, it is also celebrated in many Indian cities, outside Manipur, including but not limited to Bangalore,[4][5][6] Delhi,[7][8][9][10] Kolkata,[11][12] Mumbai,[13] Pune,[14][15][16][17] Shillong,[18] Silchar,[19][20] among many others.[21]

Definitions

The Learners' Manipuri-English Dictionary defines Ningol Chakkouba as “a social festival of the Meiteis in which married women come to their parental home and enjoy a sumptuous feast with other members of the family, as observed on the second day of new moon in the month of Hiyangei.”[22]

It also defines "Ningol" as “a woman or girl belonging to a clan or family.”[23] “Chakkouba” is defined as “an occasion of hosting a grand feast.”[24]

Etymology

In Meitei language, "Chakkouba" is made of three root words, which are "Chak" (Meitei for 'rice/food'), "Kou" (Meitei for 'to call') and "-ba" (Meitei for 'nom').[25]

According to the official website of MyGov.in of the Government of India, ningol means 'married woman' and Chakouba means 'invitation for feast'.[26]

Significance

This Manipuri festival is celebrated in the entire Manipur region as well as other regions of Manipuri settlement. Though originally celebrated by the Meitei people, now it is celebrated by a number of ethnic groups in Manipur. It is also a reunion of family. Brothers are being blessed by sisters on this special day.[27]

Celebration

The married ladies are invited to their paternal families for a feast (Chakouba) to be had together with their brothers (especially) and other family members. After the feast, they are given gifts by their brothers, father, uncles, or (any other male family members), etc. Women also bring special gift to her family.
